An International PhD Program in Immunopharmacology at the University of Palermo

A new international PhD Program in Immunopharmacology has been inaugurated from May 2011, at the University of Palermo, in collaboration with Stockholm University and the RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences (IMS), a world leading biomedical research institute located in Yokohama (Japan). Applicants should hold a master degree (or an equivalent) in Life sciences or Medicine, obtained from an internationally recognized University or institution, that would qualify them to enter a PhD or the equivalent Program in their home country.
This Doctoral Program offers cutting edge training in a variety of topics, covering Immunology and Immunopathology, Immunology of infectious diseases (particularly tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS), Tumor immunobiology (particularly tumor stem cells), Molecular and Cellular Biology, Imaging, Pharmacology and Pharmacogenomics.
Students will attend lectures and specialized courses. Training and research work will be conducted in the laboratories of any of the participating institutes, where they will get access to a large variety of core facilities with state-of-the-art equipment. At the end of their studies (typically three-four years), students will defend their PhD dissertation according to European guidelines. Students will be awarded with different degrees: (1) a licentiate thesis will be awarded by Stockholm University, after two years; (2) University of Palermo and IMS shall jointly award a certificate for the PhD program in addition to the Doctoral degree, after three years; (3) Stockholm University will award a second PhD degree, after four years, according to Swedish regulations.
Selection from candidates will be considered once a year on a competitive basis. Students will receive a stipend to cover their living expenses and health insurance. Assistance for accommodation in student residences will also be available.
